A spare and expressive terracotta head from the Bura of Niger. Though the face is restrained, there is much scarification to be seen on the back of the head and neck. The head was considered the seat of power and it is believed that these portraits are of important ancestors and clan founders. This one measures 7” high and is mounted on a custom base. Circa A.D. 300 -1100. Ex Ryann Willis. #6004 SOLD |
