Asian Tribal Art - Ivory sword hilt, Burma

This is an intricately carved ivory sword hilt from a Burmese long sword called a Dha. It represents Bilu, a fierce monster of Burmese folklore with fangs and a protruding tongue. There is another being carved on the interior, barely visible except for his arms and legs, possibly attached to the upside-down face seen midway down the front. Two pairs of inlaid black eyes are visible on the front and it stands 9" high. 19th century.  #6009  $2800
