Indonesian Tribal Art - Lulu amahu necklace, East Sumba Island, Indonesia

This sinuous plaited copper wire necklace is called a lulu amahu and is from East Sumba Island in Eastern Indonesia. It measures 64” long and has a beautiful lustrous patina from age and use. Following is a quote from “Power and Gold” by Susan Rodgers:

“Somewhat simpler chains called lulu amahu were part of the masculine metal goods that the wife-takers presented to their wife-givers as bridewealth to counterbalance the wife-givers’ feminine gifts of women, woven textiles, ivory bracelets, porcelain and beadwork.”

Early 20th century (possibly earlier) #2606  $1250
