These opalescent trocus shell bracelets are from Eastern Papua New
Guinea,
either West New
Britain or the Siassi Islands.
There are five rings of the highly prized shell in each bracelet, bound
by plaited strips of cotton fabric. Originally, these would have been
bound with fiber, but the red cotton is admired for its color. The
incised markings on each ring add a striking graphic layer to the
bracelets. The smaller, more spotted group has an interior circumference
of 9.5” while the larger measures 10.25”. Early 20th century. #2611 and
#2612. $600 each
